Yea, you can buy a board on OfferUp then YouTube your way up to some knee slapping waves. That’s how a lot of us started. But, after some reflection…the amount of injuries, time, and money definitely adds up.

Investing in an instructor can save you from that unnecessary torment.

We have SURF HACKS that technology just can’t provide for ya.

To keep it as basic as possible, here is a front and a side view of a wave with some of its anatomy labeled for ya.

Most beginners get yelled at because they cannot distinguish the direction (left or right) the wave is breaking. Reading the waves from the beach is one thing. Reading waves while sitting in the water is a whole other skill to develop as well…it’s from a different view point.

For now, just know that the surfer closest to the peak gets priority to ride the wave.

(We will save seniority and “respecting locals” for another day because this is something to take into account as well when paddle battling for waves.)

2. The tail or end of the board

3. The fins on the bottom of the board

4. The stringer or “balance beam” going down the middle of the surfboard.

Knowing the proper terminology for the surfboard will help with the learning process.

Look left, look Right, take off

It’s always nice to be courteous and share a wave, but to be safe yield the right of way to the surfer closest to the peak.
